Stay quite. Not speak up. Not shine. Not stand out. To fit in. To not disturb the status quo. The delay our dreams. To procrastinate. To never get started. To think we need the approval of someone else before we get started. <br /><br />Our childhood experiences are the ones who get in the way of our ability to choose. <br /><br />What's true is that you could choose in any moment to be free.<br /><br />But, until we become aware of our unconscious child within survival programming, we will only have the illusion of free will and choice. Why? We build false selves to fool ourselves into thinking we are happy and comfortable, but we never realise that the beams propping up their façades are rotten with the misery of unresolved childhood traumas. Thus we succumb to our childhood terrors, but we cannot outrun them.<br /><br />Recovery beckons us to heal. Recovery beckons us to grow. Recovery beckons us to become honest and speak the truth. Recovery beckons us to face our childhood fears, and not blot them out. Recovery beckons us to open up our most deeply ugly sides and air them in the cool winds of our ten stage recovery.<br /><br />If we do not, we will face worse consequences. We will grow old and shrivelled before our time. Our eyes will read deadness, our souls depression. What if, instead of telling you you are gorgeous, glorious and delightful – which you are – they treat you like a lump of meat? Well this, understandably, pickles the mind.</span><br /> <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">What if, instead of cherishing you as all parents should, one (or both) of them starts doing something not FOR you but AT you? What if, instead of talking directly to you, taking you fully into account, being respectful, they become totally preoccupied with something else – as if you were not there, an alien, a thing. This is devastating for you – annihilation is next. </span><br /> <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">So you do the only thing you can – you pretend it isn't happening,you escape,you dissociate which in a twisted way is what your abuser is already doing. This ‘pretence’ is your only available defence – it allows you to survive in an intolerable situation – but it costs and to sustain it addictions are practised. It is designed to distort reality so that you can survive in it – but that distortion needs correcting when childhood and the abuse is long over – and there’s the rub. What you worked so hard to hide, because it is vastly too dangerous to admit – must now be ventilated in full daylight – not an easy reversal, but, given enough trustworthy support, assuredly 100% possible using the ten stages.
