Instead, they'll be staring at some faraway object as though deep in thought.<br /><br />At that moment, we wonder if they are losing there marbles. But, They not. And neither are you. The student is merely getting in touch with a part of themselves that hasn't healed. It's something deep inside us called the child within - something that's been with them for years.<br /><br />We have never seen it, probably never talked to it and likely didn't know it existed. But, it's probably always been there - locked somewhere in the basement of our mind. And now that we've started the healing process, it's come to the forefront. It wants attention and it wants it now.<br /><br /><br />The child within is one of the most difficult things for our students to understand, but it's also something you'll have to come to grips with.<br /><br />For our students, the child is a real thing, although not in the physical sense. The survivor is able to feel what the child feels, talk to it, even console it. Sometimes, our students can picture the child within inside us. If we are unable to reach this wounded child then we may never heal ourselves. We prefer not to remember the sufferings of childhood, so we bury our memories and hide from them. We run away from seeing deeply into the causes of our suffering. Whenever the memories arise, however fleetingly, we think we cannot handle them and we deflect them into the deepest realms of our unconscious mind. We are terrified of further suffering. As a result, the child within may not be seen for a long time. Yet we have to find a way to reach our child and reconnect making us safe. We have to get past the fear and make contact with our suffering, because that is the way to awakening our guiding intuitive voice.<br /><br />No matter what kind of happy pretend face we present, there is also a frightened little boy or girl inside us. This suffering child colours everything we do, generating our fears, insecurities and self-loathing, damaging our relationships and our life. That child within is you, is me, and we must extend a hand to him so we can understand, defuse and transform the energy of our suffering. Meditation and compassion is a way through to the inner child. We have to embrace him our child where we still are—caught by the past, fearful, and angry at being neglected for so long. Moreover, we have to be very skilful in using non-parental judgemental language.<br /><br />We must touch the seeds of child withins suffering from our compassionate state of mindfulness and awareness, making it safe for that child to come out from behind closed doors.  We can no longer run away. We must have the courage to bring healing to our hurt child within and thereby transform ourselves. And the stages we take are not only to heal ourselves—we somehow connect to all child within, those of our ancestors and descendants and everyone else in the world. Because once we cultivate the seeds of mindful healing in ourselves, the energy of these seeds extends into all that we connect with, in a quantum leap through time and space from our cellular memories to everyone else’s. With awareness, we take our child within back into our daily life: we go on picnics, take walks, sit at the dining-room table, do the dishes together. We’re patient, realising that we’re on a splendid adventure to end a cycle of suffering that may have persisted over generations. Thus we are healing and transforming ingrained patterns transmitted to us from our ancestors and through us to our descendants, patterns that built up over time like corrosive rust and amplified the fears and suffering of our child within.</span><br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The Ten Stages is a studied recovery course. It is awesome to penetrate the darkness and realise that the abuse we suffered as a child has created an abusive relationship with our adult self.</span><div> <span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div> <div> <span style="font-size: large;">Meditational practice can bring the abusive relationship to a halt. This OMG moment propels us to get to study the stages, to go below the surface and investigate the causes of our suffering. And so we learn the practices, tools and concentrations that support us on our journey toward understanding our suffering and resolving it. There are clear warning signals of deeper suffering if we choose to pay attention: We get caught up in our dramas and find ourselves telling and retelling our stories to whomever will listen. We engage in competition—my suffering is bigger than yours. And we repeat our suffering, keeping it alive.<br /><br /><br />The repetition of our suffering is an ugly romance, for we enter into a co-dependent relationship, which has to be called by its true name: addiction. Physiologically and emotionally we become so tightly tied into our suffering that we cannot be without it even though it’s destroying our well-being. We grasp at brief insights—yes, this is suffering—but only when they appear on the surface of our awareness. Yet the hidden suffering has a way of gathering momentum and energy until it finally surfaces in its entirety: the small snake has become a monster. The addiction to suffering is now embedded in our mental state. We respond to any glimpse of suffering with such destructive emotion that we reinforce the causes and conditions that created the suffering in the first place. And so we continue shooting ourselves in the foot—over and over again.<br /></span>The Ten Stages is a studied recovery course. We emerge into the open with our new creation. But most importantly, we emerge as a new variation of humanity, aligned with truth. This is how we define Recovery. With our collapse into more and more dissociation looming, the time for morphing into a new way of recovery is becoming a necessity.<br /><br />Yet we may succumb to fear. When the ideas we hold are too revolutionary, too unsettling for the family and the norm and even our conventional sides to accept, we fear expressing our truth. We know the consequences of familial and social ostracism are painful to bear. We fear giving birth to the stages that are developing within us because we will be banished. We may let the stages die within us, such that this new life becomes stillborn, causing no disturbance to the status quo. In this way no conscience is challenged and no mind is forced to question—and we hide within the walls of our conformity. Our sword of truth remains hidden in a sheathe of fear. And slowly we begin to die.<br /><br />But for some of us there comes a time when we are strong enough, when critical mass is reached. We rally our forces and choose to honour the life and the creativity that teem within us. Do or die, we must be honest. We begin to live openly with our new stages creation exposed—refusing to bow down in order to protect the betrayals of the family and culture. We do not worry about the future or about consequences. This is one of the mysteries of life and also one of the saving graces of human existence. No matter what traumas we endured during our childhood, even during our troubled days in the womb, our core remains inviolate, untainted, sacred, and pure.<br /><br />But why are we sacred? Our humanity is sacred because of our capacity to interface with truth. Our true self is that juncture where our human limits interface with the expansiveness of the truth in all things.<br /><br />Yet until we differentiate from our parents and their historical legacy, some degree of our true self remains buried, knowledgeable and contactable. An undifferentiated us cannot live consonant with his or her true self and instead remains a reflection of limited parents.<br /><br />If we remain subject to the fearful, and coercive parental voices housed inside ourselves since childhood, we have not found our true voice or our true identity, but remain a reflection of those who wounded us.
